Signing of SAR Center Building Contract with NAGA Architects

JAK is pleased to announce the signing of a major contract with NAGA Architects to design a state-of-the-art Search and Rescue (SAR) Center at Al-Faw Port, Basra. The project, awarded by the General Company for Ports of Iraq, will enhance JAK’s role in providing maritime safety and emergency response solutions for the region.

A Modern Facility for Efficiency and Safety

The SAR Center will include accommodation strategically located to ensure quick and efficient access for personnel. This placement is essential for fast response times, allowing for seamless operations during critical moments. The facility will prioritize safety and comfort, creating a supportive environment for staff while ensuring continuous operational readiness.

Design Brief

The Search and Rescue (SAR) Center at Al-Faw Port will serve as a regional hub dedicated not only to saving lives at sea but also to environmental stewardship. The dual mission of the center includes performing critical rescue operations and oil spills , ensuring safer navigation and healthier ecosystems.

The architectural design is inspired by the concept of multiple hands pulling each other, symbolizing collective effort, cooperation, and unity in rescue and recovery. Through interwoven structural elements, the center will embody this symbolism, becoming an iconic representation of safety, sustainability, and teamwork.

This high-tech facility will include an advanced observation tower equipped with both night and day cameras and cutting-edge search technology to enhance monitoring capabilities. The tower will also provide a bird’s-eye view of the Gulf, facilitating real-time tracking of rescue missions and environmental conditions. Additionally, the center will feature a workshop, a medical clinic, staff accommodations, dining facilities, and administrative offices.

General Design Considerations

1. Architectural Symbolism and Public Engagement

The concept of multiple hands pulling each other will be integrated through interlocking structural elements and façade designs, representing teamwork, rescue, and environmental care. The observation tower and public spaces will feature murals, sculptures, or installations depicting rescue and recovery efforts, engaging visitors with the center’s mission. At night, illuminated lines along the building’s façades will symbolize continuous efforts and cooperation.

2. Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility

The center will incorporate solar panels, wind turbines, and energy-efficient HVAC systems to reduce its carbon footprint. Rainwater harvesting systems and water filtration units will ensure sustainable water use, while green spaces with native plants will enhance biodiversity and contribute to staff well-being. The workshop and recovery center will employ advanced waste management systems to handle hazardous materials safely and prevent sea pollution.

3. Structural Resilience and Safety

Designed to withstand coastal conditions, the facility will endure high winds, saltwater corrosion, and high humidity. Fire-resistant materials and emergency evacuation systems will be integrated, ensuring the center’s safety. Additionally, the design will comply with international maritime, safety, and environmental standards.

4. Accessibility and Inclusivity

Universal design principles will ensure the entire facility is accessible to people with disabilities. Elevators, ramps, and accessible restrooms will be available throughout the building, making it inclusive for all staff and visitors.

5. Landscape and External Spaces

The landscape will feature green corridors and courtyards for informal gatherings and relaxation, with drought-tolerant native plants minimizing water usage. Public pathways and external spaces will reflect the center’s mission through symbolic design elements, encouraging visitor engagement with its goals.

Long-Term Impact and Collaboration

This project marks another important milestone in JAK’s long-standing partnership with the General Company for Ports of Iraq. The new SAR Center will play a critical role in enhancing Iraq’s maritime safety and environmental conservation efforts for years to come, further solidifying the region’s capacity for rapid response to emergencies.
